About This Quote

If you have ever fainted, you are a stranger in the land of the dead! This is one of the most widely-quoted proverbs that is a warning for people who have experienced a medical emergency. It was written by a 19th century physician named Samuel Crothers and was later popularized by an article in Sports Illustrated magazine in 1977. The article was about a young runner named Terri Schiavo. Schiavo had been in a persistent vegetative state for fifteen years after an automobile accident left her with severe brain damage.

Her parents wanted to ensure that she would be taken care of until she died, so they arranged for her feeding tube to be removed. Their decision sparked a tremendous amount of controversy and protests from both supporters and detractors of assisted suicide.
